  1. What is a juice cleanse?

To cleanse is to ‘make something thoroughly clean’.  This is how we view a juice cleanse; a way to clean-up how you are eating and treating your body.  A juice cleanse is a set period of time where one abstains from eating food and nourishes the body (and mind!) using vegetable and fruit juices, nut milks and water.

     2.   Why do a juice cleanse?

Incorporating fresh, alive, and diverse vegetable and fruit juices into your life will be a fantastic step towards improving your health and how you feel.  Undertaking a juice cleanse is taking that healthy feeling to the next level.  The greatest benefit of juicing is that it allows us to consume high volumes of nutritious vegetables and fruits without burdening our digestive system with the work of extracting the micronutrients from the produce.  By taking a break from eating and just drinking juice, you are allowing your body space and opportunity to spend energy on other important activities like healing and detoxification.  When you stop and think about it, our body has been continuously working on digestion since we were born!  The human body is a truly fantastic machine !  A juice cleanse is an opportunity to reset the palate, examine your eating habits and rethink your approach to nourishing your body, your mind and your soul.

Many of the cleansing programs that are out there are quite specific and rigorous.  At Totem Juice, we are just a couple of people who love juice and want to help you find ways to incorporate it into your life.  We have experienced the benefits of using juice cleansing as a practice and want to encourage you to find out how it can work for you.  We offer 1-day, 2-day and 3- day cleanse packages with general guidelines of how to make the most of your juice cleanse.  Ultimately, you know yourself best and you will learn how to make juicing and cleansing work for you.

     3.    Who can cleanse? Who should not cleanse?

Cleansing can be a beneficial practice for adults in good health. If you have a medical condition and/or are taking medication(s), we would advise you to consult with your medical doctor before considering a cleanse. People under the age of 18, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding can certainly incorporate juicing into their lives but should avoid cleansing.

     4.    What should I avoid when cleansing? Why?

In order to achieve maximum benefit from your juice cleanse, we would recommend abstaining from caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes leading up to, during and for several days after your cleanse. It is also important to cut out inflammatory and processed foods in preparation for your cleanse. These include corn, processed soy, cow’s milk, eggs, gluten, red meat (or other non-organic meat), shellfish and white sugar. These foods and products can contribute to inflammation in the body and eliminating them in advance of the cleanse period helps to prepare your body for the process ahead while also easing the transition from your standard diet to an all liquid one.

      5.   How should I prepare for my cleanse?

As mentioned above, an elimination diet pre-cleanse will be very helpful in easing the transition from your standard diet to a juice cleanse. By introducing more whole foods (read: not processed) and raw foods, your digestive system can prepare for what is ahead. The ‘cleanse before the cleanse’ also helps to decrease the side effects of withdrawing from things like caffeine, sugar and nicotine during the cleanse period. Getting lots of rest, keeping hydrated and enjoying some exercise are always helpful.
> 2 DAYS BEFORE begin eliminating processed sugars, fats, caffeine and alcohol. Increase your daily water consumption and add lemon to reduce acidic pH levels. Mentally and emotionally embrace this break from digestion and over indulgence as positive space to welcome healthy change and evoke higher consciousness about your diet, schedule and personal wellness.

      6.    How will I feel when I cleanse? What side effects can I expect?

Cleansing is a process that helps you connect with your body, mind and spirit. We hold so much emotion in our bodies and often a cleanse is a time where these emotions come to the surface, we become aware of them and can set them free. There are a variety of physical and emotional symptoms that arise while cleansing: changes in digestion, headaches, skin breakouts, fatigue, weight changes, changes to sleep patterns, irritability, congestion. These are normal symptoms experienced during a juice cleanse. The bulk of these are experienced in the first 24-36 hours; treat yourself with grace and give yourself time and space to rest. After this period, many people begin to enjoy the benefits of cleansing: more energy, improved moods, regular digestion, mental clarity, clear skin and sinuses.

       7.    How should I transition out of my cleanse?

When the cleanse period is over, it is best to transition out slowly and using the elimination diet that you entered the cleanse with for several days. You may crave more liquid meals and not be ready for filling up on heavy foods. Listen your body’s natural cues! This process is a great step towards moving toward a change in dietary patterns as it can help to reset the palate and foster healthy habits. Juicing, cleansing and eating more whole foods are great steps towards living healthfully and improving your well-being. Congratulations on taking this time to focus on your health!
